Two Indian Speakers at Pauline Seminar

ROME — Of the eleven presentations held over two afternoons at the Salesian University Rome (UPS) Paul VI Hall, two Indian professors presented papers. They were: Prof. Jesu Pudumai Doss of Canon Law Faculty (23 April) and Prof. Jerome Vallabaraj of the Educational Sciences Faculty (April 24). A third Indian, Prof. Cyril DeSouza introduced the speakers in one of the sessions.

The topics they covered included: “Individual rights as seen in the regulations of the Institutions of the time” Prof. Pudumai; and “Education to the faith in the face of the challenges and expectations of many different cultures” Prof. Vallabaraj.

Marking the Year of St. Paul

The Salesian Pontifical University in Rome organized the seminar entitled “In the foot-steps of Paul: The challenge to education between faith and culture,” 23-24 April.

The Vice-chancellor Prof. Fr Mario Toso and seminar coordinator Prof. Fr Manlio Sodi respectively introduced the sessions held on two afternoons.
Pope Benedict XVI appointed Fr Sodi Professor of Sacramental Theology, Liturgy and Homiletics (UPS Theology Faculty) President of the Pontifical Academy of Theology (29 March).

“The seminar was the Salesian University’s contribution to the Year of St. Paul involving all six faculties,” added Fr. Sodi.

The Communication faculty contribution by dean Prof Franco Lever and Prof. Carlo Tagliabue entitled “The Person of Paul in the Cinema” listed a sampling of audiovisual coverage on St Paul since 1912. Other topics discussed were: “Paul, a ‘Roman’ Rabbi in the Hellenic culture. What lesson for today?” Prof. Maurizio Marin; “Paul, a master of dialogue between brothers, faith and different cultures” Prof. Sabino Palumbieri (read by Prof. Louis Roson); “Respecting the law under the guidance of the Spirit”  Prof. Markus Graulich; “The transmission of Pauline thought in the Eastern Fathers” Prof. Mario Maritano; “The transmission of Pauline thought in some Western Fathers of the Church”, Prof. Biagio Amata; “Paul, an interpreter of the Old Covenant for the New Covenant in Christ”  Prof. Rafael Vicent; “The Christian moral conscience in Paul” Prof. Paolo Carlotti and “From Pauline forms of  ‘Vocations’ to education as the call in Christ” Prof. Mario Oscar Llanos.
President of the Pontifical Council for Culture, Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi concluded the proceedings with his address entitled: “Educating today, between faith and culture – offering some perspectives for today.”
