Father C. M. Paul SDB receives the Prestigious John Barrett Award for the BEST REPORTER of the South Asia Religious News 2007-2008

KOLKATA, India – The Salesians of South Asia region, both staff and students at the Salesian University felicitated Fr. C. M. Paul who received the prestigious John Barrett Award for the BEST REPORTER of the South Asia Religious News 2007-2008.

The award named after Jesuit founder of the Indian Catholic Press Association (ICPA) was given in absentia at the 14th National Journalists conference held in Bangalore 12 May. Thirty one Salesians were present at the UPS gathering, 26 May, which also welcomed the new regional Fr Maria Arokiam and bid farewell to fellow students who would complete their studies in June and return to their provinces.

Fr. Paul is the first Salesian to receive the award which includes a citation and statuette and cash prize of Rs. 10,000 (ten thousand). The founder director of SAR News Fr Varghese Paul SJ received the award on behalf of Fr Paul and the editor of The Herald Kolkata, Fr Sunil Rosario handed it over at the Salesian Provincial House, Kolkata. Fr Rosario also published an article along with photo of Fr Paul who was editor of the Herald (1989-1991), the oldest Catholic weekly in India, established in 1839.

Currently doing his doctoral studies in Communications at the Salesian University, Fr Paul is Rome reporter for SAR News which started in 1981. Earlier in Rome as director of the Salesin News Agency (ANS) 1992-1995, Fr Paul was also editor of Catechetics India published from Kolkata (1997-2006).

A former two term Executive Board member of the ICPA, Fr Paul also served two-terms as president of Signis-India, national Catholic association for radio, television and cinema.

Holder of two Masters degrees in Mass Communication as well as Religious Education from Fordham University New York, Fr Paul has the distinction of being the first priest to be on the Advisory Panel of the Central Board of Film Certification, under Information & Broadcasting Ministry, Gov of India.
