Orissa Riots: Port Blair Bishop Seeks President’s Intervention

PORT BLAIR, Andaman & Nicobar Islands (SAR NEWS) – Bishop Alex Dias of Port Blair in a letter to the President of India, Pratibha Patil, has highlighted the plight of “the Christian brothers and sisters in the state of Orissa who are being subjected to all kinds of atrocities by the enemies of Christian faith.”

The prelate – in his letter dated December 27, which he submitted to the President personally during her visit to Andaman and Nicobar – stated that the Church leaders and the people of Orissa feared that the riots were becoming a state-sponsored massacre of the Christian minorities, like the one that took place in Gujarat some years ago.

(The Gujarat riots had claimed the lives of over a thousand Muslims).

Bishop Dias urged President Patil to intervene and stop “this rule of the jungle, which hardly befits us as citizens of this great country which the world hails as the biggest democracy.”

Scores of Christians were killed and many of their homes were set on fire in Kandhamal district of Orissa, allegedly by pro-Hindu groups.
